U·MOB LIFE IN A NUTSHELL

«An ambitious project set to make a difference in our habits by developing sustainable mobility in European universities».

TELL ME MORE...

The European strategy on the urban environment aims to «drastically transform the balance between different transport systems, prioritising public over private transport and reducing the impact of cars in our cities». This requires effective tools to encourage the use of sustainable means of transport, as well as awareness-raising and training for society as a whole to reduce the use of private cars in daily commuting.

Universities are important hubs that generate regular journeys. Thousands of journeys are made to and from European universities every day. The mobility created by universities should therefore be taken into account when planning urban transport systems.

On the other hand, universities have their own management centres that make decisions about the territorial management of campuses, the academic and working timetables of the university community, as well as other important issues that affect the mobility of thousands of people.

Moreover, universities play a key role in educating the citizens and professionals of the future, and are powerful drivers of change. Integrating sustainable mobility practices into education fosters future change.

Therefore, universities are a powerful instrument for the implementation of current and future European policies, and projects such as U·MOB LIFE allows for effective changes in line with the main EU strategies, especially in the field of environmental policy.

Thus, U·MOB LIFE aims to create a university network to facilitate the exchange and transfer of knowledge on best practices in sustainable mobility between European universities. The resulting network serves as a tool to reduce CO2 emissions by improving the mobility of the university community.

OBJECTIVES

To raise community awareness on the need to reduce CO2 emissions from European universities, and on the important role universities play in the education of present and future generations.

Create and consolidate a «European University Network for Sustainable Mobility» capable of transferring best practices during the project and multiplying them when the project ends.

To communicate and disseminate in an attractive way knowledge about good practices on campuses of EU universities.

Promote and build capacity for the professional figure of the «Sustainable Mobility Manager» in European universities; define a qualification profile and create a course to train mobility managers.

Define and implement best practices on European campuses to reduce CO2 emissions during the project and after its completion.

Encourage the development of sustainable mobility policies between public authorities and transport companies.
